Completed in 2024, the renovation of Feroviarilor Park is based on the winning proposal of the 2018 international design competition organized by the Cluj-Napoca City Hall and the Romanian Order of Architects.
Located on the northeastern edge of the city center, along the banks of the Someșul Mic River, the project follows the principles of sustainable urban development. It reintegrates natural elements such as water and vegetation into the city while providing a variety of public spaces for both neighborhood and city-level communities. All interventions were designed to be non-invasive and reversible, preserving the site’s natural character.
The park is conceived as part of the Someș River ecological system, with the river acting as the main ecological axis of the area. The restoration of the riverbanks is complemented by wetlands and a rainwater collection system, creating dynamic landscape features that support local biodiversity and natural water cycles.
Feroviarilor Park is organized into four functional zones, running parallel to the river, each with its own character and use: Someș Strip – the area closest to the river, focused on nature and quiet recreation; Ecological Strip – featuring wetlands and native vegetation; Cultural Strip – offering open spaces for exhibitions and cultural events; Social Strip – the most urban zone, designed for community and leisure activities.
Much of the existing vegetation was preserved, including notable mature trees, while new plantings reflect the local ecosystems of the Someșul Mic region, from wetlands and meadows to hillside areas.
