Completed in 2023, the revitalization of the Firefighters’ Tower is based on the winning proposal of the international design competition launched in 2017 by the Cluj-Napoca City Hall in partnership with the Romanian Order of Architects.
The competition aimed to restore and transform this emblematic historical landmark, reintegrating it into the city’s tourist and cultural circuit. The initiative attracted 25 proposals from Romania and abroad, evaluated by an international jury. Beyond the success of the competition itself, it marked a turning point for Cluj-Napoca’s public administration, introducing a transparent and quality-driven approach to architectural competitions for public projects.
Following this milestone, several important public investments in the city were assigned through similar international competitions, leading to a visible improvement in the quality and creativity of architectural and urban interventions. The revitalization of the Firefighters’ Tower thus opened a new chapter in Cluj-Napoca’s development, strengthening collaboration between architects and local authorities and redefining how the city approaches the rehabilitation of heritage buildings and public spaces.
